This recipe is totally vegan, and also includes a super quick and easy recipe for a creamy vegan paprika dip to go along with the lovely nuggets!
So let’s get cooking!
(And don’t forget, you can grab Schwartz’s Classic Chip Seasoning from Tesco!)
(NOTE: This is a sponsored post with Schwartz, who sent me their Paprika & Onion Classic Chip Seasoning for use in this recipe. For more information, take a look at the Affiliate Disclaimer)
Ingredients
- 60g tempura batter mix (or mix together 30g each of flour and cornstarch)
- 50ml ice cold sparkling water
- 3 tsp Schwartz Paprika & Onion Chip Seasoning (1 tsp for dip/2 tsp for batter)
- 1 block of firm tofu, cut into cubes
- Plain flour
- 2 tbsp alternative creme fraiche (I recommend Oatly Oat Fraiche)
- Olive oil
- Spring onions to garnish
Method
- Cut up the block of tofu into roughly 2cm thick slices and coat with plain flour to help the batter stick. If desired, press the tofu to remove the excess moisture, giving you even firmer cubes for frying.
- Mix up the tempura batter. You can either use pre-made batter or create a mixture using 30 grams of cornstarch and 30 grams of plain flour. Then mix in around 50ml of ice cold sparkling water (but regular water also works!) until the batter is smooth. Add in your seasonings and mix thoroughly.
- Heat up some olive oil in a pan. There should be enough oil that the tofu pieces do not touch the bottom of the pan, else they will stick. Wait until the oil is hot enough before you start frying, the batter should bubble like crazy when you fry it!
- Coat each piece of tofu in your tempura batter and fry for 15-20 seconds, or until the batter turns golden brown. Remove from the oil and place on a paper towel to remove the excess oil.
- For the dip, take 2 tablespoons of dairy-free creme fraiche or thick cream (I recommend Oatly Oat Fraiche!), and mix in a tablespoon of our paprika and onion seasoning.
- Garnish the tofu with chopped spring onions and get dipping!
Enjoy!
